Description:

13th c. Medieval Bible Leaf on vellum painted by William de Brailes from Oxford, England
Original leaf from an English medieval manuscript pocket Bible. Produced in Oxford, ca. 1240. Illuminated initials painted by William de Brailes--one of the few 13th c. English illuminators known by name. De Brailes maintained an active workshop at Oxford (c. 1238-52) and was the illuminator of the Oxford Bible. The text is in small Latin Gothic script, written in brown ink, on animal vellum. Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and fantastic linear abstract marginalia (especially on the verso side) in red and blue. Each page features 54 lines of text in double columns (and there are 10 lines of text per vertical inch). An historiated initial "O" on the recto side depicts the Prophet Malachi and opens the Book of Malachi: Onus verbi Domini ad Israhel... (The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel...). The illuminated initial "D" on the verso side begins the Prologue for the Chapter Maccabees.
