I am often asked the question ‘What is the most interesting thing you have sold?’ Since it rolled up to Link in a horse trailer on a wintery January day, the life-size papier-mâché horse has always been my answer. This magnificent creature is an anatomical study created by the French Doctor Louis Auzoux (1797-1880).
Sold in our February Gallery auction in 2015, this Quarter Horse still holds the auction record for works by Auzoux at $33,000. The horse, like all of Auzoux’s models, disassembles into hundreds of hand-painted body parts, all labeled in French.
