A Fine Art Deco Bronze Chryselephantine Figure, The Russian Dancer by Phillipe
Paul Phillipe (1870-1930), a well cast bronze and carved figure of an exotic dancer, in period Art Deco costume, of patinated bronze perched upon a green onyx plinth. The figure with painted headband and outstretched arms (small damage to end of finger on the figures right hand). 16 3/4 inches to tip of left hand, signed to top of onyx base P. Phillipe, impressed foundry stamp to back of foot - Bronze A.G. Paris 22 V.
A French painter and sculptor, Phillipe studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Antonin Larroux, exhibited at the Paris Salon. Philippe is one of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco period and produced many Chryselephantine figures of exotic and Russian dancers.
