The U.S. Supreme Court determined that the Constitution was not intended to include citizenship for African Americans such as Scott, and the Dred Scott case was one of the sparks that ignited the American Civil War. The last two opinions, that of Justices McLean and Curtis, argued in favour of Scott's freedom. Unfortunately, the Court's decision was 7-2 in favour of his return to slavery. Sabin 33240.
