Description:

Albert Pierre Rene Maignan
French, (1845-1908)
Study for The Voices of Alarm
watercolor and pencil on paper
signed and dated lower left, framed.

Verso, #36 bells in different handwriting from the Specimen 0.0

This piece appears to be a study for the "The Voices of Alarm ' tableau showcased at the Musée de Picardie in France to the best of our knowledge. This piece was inspired by a trip to inspect the bell of the Saint-Prix church. He presented the final piece at the 1888 Salon. It was then exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 after which it was purchased by the French Government to go into their "patrimoine culturel" and displayed at the Musée de Picardie.

This piece appears to have been a watercolor study in preparation for the final tableau, and it puts everything on a much smaller scale. On the back it says specimen 0.0 which could mean it was the first study of this version.

  • Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 7 inches
