Description:

Cast Marble Head of the Virgin Mary (from Michelangelo's Pietà in St. Peter's Basilica)
Head of the Virgin Mary (from Michelangelo's Pietà, Basilica of St. Peter's, Città del Vaticano) made from 65 oz. of cast marble (a compound of marble powder from Carrara and polymer) in 1982. Created by the Vatican's Department of Scientific Research and in cooperation with the Vatican Museums.

The reproduction features the head and face of the Virgin Mary from the larger-than-life iconic masterpiece sculptural composition of Mary holding Jesus on her lap, stemming from the foreign Vesperbild tradition made popular by the young Michelangelo in Rome. The original work was commissioned as a monument for the Old St. Peter's by a French Cardinal, Jean de Bilhères. It was created by Michelangelo Buonarroti around 1499; and it subsequently brought great fame to Michelangelo as a sculptor.
