Narcissus or Dionysus
bronze
Dionysus (Greek) or Narcissus (Latin) was cast as a bronze statuette sometime between the 1st century BCE and 1st century CE probably somewhere in or around Naples. In 1862 the statue was discovered (in its entirety) in Pompeii and is believed to be a copy of an ancient Greek original from the School of Praxiteles (from the 4th century BCE); the 1st c. copy now stands in the famous Archeological Museum in Naples. Immediately after its discovery, this incredibly refined sculpture gained great popularity and was copied many times; this is a fine 19th c. copy made of the ancient sculpture excavated in Pompeii.

This very fine statue depicts an idealized naked, slender, thoughtful ephebe (male adolescent) standing in a contrapposto pose with a detailed ivy wreath on his head. A goatskin is thrown over his left shoulder, and tall intricately designed sandals are on his feet. The statuette attracted the attention of many 19th and early 20th c. writers including: Oscar Wilde, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Vyacheslav Ivanov and St. Louis' Tennessee Williams.
