David Linares
Mexican, (b. 1963)
Massive Papier Mache Fantastical Creature (Alebrije)

David Linares is part of a celebrated dynasty of Mexican Folk Artists who specialize in "cartonería" which is the art of painted papier mache to create sculptures. This art form has been in existence from the 18th Century and the Linares have been master craftsmen from then.

The Linares family's work can be found all over the world: the British Museum, National Museum of Mexican Art, Brooklyn Museum, and others. These albrijé are an invention of the Linares family based on wood carvings from Oaxaca. They claim only pieces made of papier mache in Mexico City should bear the name albreje. These caught the attention of Frida Kahlo and Diego Reivera who purchased many from their creator, Pedro Linares.

The fantastic jaguar iguana hybrid is a stunning piece made of papier mache made of a combination of paper and cardboard. The fearsome teeth and fins are exquisitely detailed and wonderfully colorful. This piece brings the traditions of Mexican folk art screaming into the 21st century and would be a statement piece anywhere it goes.
