Description:

Frank Nuderscher
Missouri, (1880-1959)
The Road to the Woods
oil on artist board
signed lower left, in a beautiful, period carved giltwood frame.

Frank Nuderscher was an important St. Louis figure in the art world from the 1920s onward and until the time of his passing in 1959. He served many art roles in the city while working as a painter, muralist and illustrator (including the supervision of St. Louis' fascinating WPA projects of the 1930s). He loved working on street scenes, architectural monuments and with Missouri landscapes; and he probably created what would become known as his finest work when observing the natural panoramas and floral beauty of the ancient Ozark Mountain area located in the southern half of the State toward Arkansas (the word "Ozark" itself comes from the French phrase: "Aux Arcs", or "toward Arkansas.") He loved employing pastel colors to capture delicate impressionistic meteorological elements such as haze, fog, mist and sunlight. The natural beauty that Nuderscher loved stood in sharp contrast with many common elements from the eras in which many of his tranquil and beautiful landscapes were created, notably the Great Depression and the World Wars. Here we see an idealised, shady, lovely pastel-based country dirt road leading on towards the deep Missouri woods in full summer bloom, packed with local examples of native plants and trees. An old-time rustic makeshift portable wooden fence runs along the far side of the road, indicating that were are not yet fully in the wilds of the Missouri woods. Nuderscher used brushstrokes thick with many shades of greens, lavenders, beiges and pinks in order to achieve texture, depth and beauty. It is a lovely companion piece to Nuderscher's "Summer," also available in this auction.
