Description:

Giovanni Vitalba
Venice, Italy, 1738-1792
Two Prints. 1) Untitled (subject = Madonna Reading Book Held By Cherub); 2) Venezia (by unknown artist)
copper etching print
This lovely 18th c. old master etching (dated 1764) was made by Giovanni Vitalba of Venice who lived and worked in London. It is printed in brown ink and is based off of a painted portrait of the Madonna reading, originally by a famous painter named Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (called "Guercino"), 1591-1666, of Cento, Italy.

The second print is entitled "Venice" and is a 19th c. colored engraving (artist's name is indecipherable (possibly Mimi Bili (?)). It is a classic Venetian scene along the Grand Canal, a popular colored-in souvenir print made as a "ricordo di Venezia" for the late 19th c. or early 20th c. traveller. This particular scene focuses on the 15th c. Ca d'Oro (The House of Gold) built by the Contarini family. The facade is a mix of Venetian Gothic, Islamic and Byzantine styles and was once covered in gold leaf. Today the enormous palace holds the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti. This scene was originally sketched from across the Canal Grande, from a lovely location under the portico of the Mercato di Rialto, still a produce and fish market, active from the 11th c.

  • Dimensions: 1) ca. 10" x 13" (full paper size is ca. 14" x 18"). 2) ca. 8" x 11"
  • Medium: copper etching print
