Description:

Inuit Sculpture of a Walrus and a Large Arctic Bird
This finely-carved hand-sized sculptural ensemble made of grey steatite ("soap stone"), found throughout the Arctic region and worked by the native Inuit population, contains two separate individual sculptures: a walrus in water and a large bird flying with its wings extended above him. The bird is suspended in the air and separated from the walrus and water as it rests on top of a small wooden pole. The piece is dated 1968 and signed in Inuit lettering and also as E-9-1968. A sticker on the bottom of the piece identifies it as having been carved by an artist whose first name begins with 'A' and whose last name is Alayco.
