Description:

Jacques (or Iacopo when in Italy) Callot
Duchy of Lorraine (France); Rome; Tuscany, 1592-1635
Caprices: The Italian Farm
copper engraving
Born in the Duchy of Lorraine, Jacques Callot (1592-1635) became a master of masters, an engraver who pushed the engraver's craft forward, developing several new techniques for engraving and printing improvement (including a new needle called the échoppe that facilitated design making). He trained with Philippe Tomasssin in Rome and Antonio Tempesta in Florence before working for the Medici Court in Tuscany. He made hundreds of etchings, mostly about individual characters and genre scenes that he witnessed in Lorraine and Tuscany.

This incredibly detailed small copper etching has been called a "caprice" or "capriccio" of mixed elements from a farm where he probably spent some time on a late summer day sometime sometime between 1635 and 1646. The print focuses on the 'courtyard' of a Tuscan-style farmhouse with a portico for the storage of hay, other farm structures in the background, a labourer hammering something on a cart, a playful dog and a cow grazing, various farmhands at work; and in the foreground we see a man seated, resting near the bottom of a tree, walking stick in hand. Several important museums hold a copy of this print.
