Description:

James Henry Daugherty
District Of Columbia, New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, (1887-1974)
Beach Scene, 1930s
oil on board
Daugherty worked as an American modernist painter, muralist and award-winning illustrator of children's books with American themes (e.g. Daniel Boone, Lincoln, the Pilgrims, etc.).

This fascinating beach scene focuses on the study of many aspects of six people who are outside enjoying a summer afternoon in the 1930s. Most of them wear swimwear--although two of the six appear to be dancing or wrestling while standing up naked in the background. The painting represents an engaging study by Daugherty of multiple asymmetrical shapes and forms; nuanced skin tones from his varied and subtle palette that go hand in hand with his exploration of light and shadow; and a sheer fascination with the muscles and complex movements of the human body.
