Description:

Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Le Prince
France, 1734-1781
Landscape scene dated 1765
copper plate etching
Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) learned his trade from the famed Parisian Rococo master François Boucher. Le Prince spent five years creating art in St. Petersburg for Catherine the Great (1758-1763) before becoming an elected member of the Académie de peinture et de sculpture in 1765--the same year that he created this etching (and signed it as such).

This rare piece offers us a glance at 18th c. European farm life as it includes farmers, a shepherd, a woman and infant, cows, calves, a couple of farm houses with thatched roofs, felled trees and branches, a large bird plus small birds circling in the sky, a wooden wash basin, and a curious mini-houselike storage structure on stilts and something that resembles a Sami storage hut (njalla) used to safeguard dried fish and meats from wolverines and other wild animals--thus possibly recalling something Le Prince had seen when in Russia.

  • Dimensions: ca. 4" x 5"
  • Medium: copper plate etching
