Jerry O. Wilkerson (1942-2007) earned his MFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 1968, and by 1976 he enjoyed his first solo exhibit in New York City; in the 1980s, his work was featured in many galleries across the U.S. (as well as in Italy at the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Contemporanea at Castel San Pietro Terme). Today his work is collected in museums around the country. And a vast body of his work was the object of a solo show at Dragon, Crab and Turtle Gallery here in Mid-town St. Louis ("I can't believe it's not butter," 2022).

Wilkerson's work is recognizable and loved for his use of pointillism, a style of painting based on dots of individual colors (rather than on colors blended on a palette) that became popular in late 19th c. France. Artists such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac began experimenting with the technique that eventually attracted a string of artists including Camille Pisarro and Vincent Van Gogh. Wilkerson used this style to capture quotidian American objects, including many recognisable popular foods (burgers, fries, ketchup, butter, chocolate chip cookies, fortune cookies, Fig Newtons, Diet Sprite, Busch Light, Sicilian cannoli, KFC, coffee and although not a food: cigarettes; please note that on healthier days Wilkerson also loved to paint bananas, pears, eggplant and citrus fruits). He created still life paintings of what many Americans consumed in the 1970s and 1980s including this 1978/79 painting (acrylic dots on canvas) featuring a hamburger carefully placed inside a rounded and perfect-looking white bread bun and with lettuce, parsley and tomato as garnish. His work is original and fun and will make viewers who grew up in his day feel nostalgic for times past.
