Description:

Kathryn E. Bard Cherry
Missouri/Illinois, (1860-1931)
Tulips from Window
oil on canvas
signed lower right, gilt-framed.

Cherry studied painting at a variety of institutes (the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the New York School of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) and won many awards as she exhibited across the country, ultimately landing a job as head of the Art Department at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Cherry enjoyed operating with a full-spectrum palette featuring bright and cheerful colors in her impressionistic paintings; and over the course of her life she focussed on one strong theme: a love of nature.

Here Cherry created a still life scene that includes much for the viewer to enjoy: over a dozen colourful tulips in various states of bloom held in a rounded royal blue vase, a crisp white and blue decorative table cloth, a small yellow catchall, and through the large square panes of a window we see a calm lake with some sail boats floating at rest. Although several elements in this piece recall classic old-world Dutch painting, perhaps Cherry's optimistic and inviting scene was based on her own view of an inlet within the enormous Lake of the Ozarks, possibly created there while she taught painting at the Ozark Art Colony.
