Large Antique Plaster Frieze of Sacrificial Scene from Naós of the Parthenon, Athens
An ancient Greek scene depicting four youths leading two cows to be sacrificed is seen here in high relief; the original was sculpted by the famous Greek sculptor Phidias in the 5th c. BCE and created to adorn the naós (inner chamber/ known as the dwelling of the Gods) of the Parthenon atop the Acropolis. The frieze was created to honour the goddess Athena. 80 metres of this frieze is held at the British Museum and was purchased by/ taken to London by Lord Elgin, a 19th c. ambassador; these marble friezes are thus know as part of the "Elgin Marbles" collection. Poet John Keats wrote about them in his sonnet, "On Seeing the Elgin Marbles."
