Description:

Large Copper Charger featuring Louis XVI Roi de France
This 19th c. charger was likely cast as a centennial piece in commemoration of the 1783 Treaty of Paris that formally ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized the Thirteen Colonies as an independent sovereign nation. Featured on the charger is Louis XVI (1754-93) who served as king of France (1774-1793) and who was the grandson and successor of King Louis XV. Here we see him in his late 20s as a healthy man with beautiful curled hair and dressed in royal attire. He was the last French king to inhabit the Palace of Versailles before being executed by guillotine in Paris at age 38. This large decorative charger is outlined with floral designs and 4 beautifully shaped fleur de lis forms. It is signed with the initials E.R.
