Description:

Late 16th c. (or early 17th c.) Italian Oil Painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds
"Adorazione dei pastori" or "Adoration of the Shepherds" is an antique high quality copy of an original work made by Sebastiano Filippi called Bastianino (1530 ca.--1605 ca.), a late Renaissance master painter from Ferrara who was linked to the court of Duke Alfonso II d'Este (1533-1597). The outdoor scene in front of Italianate ancient ruins set in Bethlehem depicts Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus surrounded by three shepherds who have come to see him thanks to the angel above who has indicated to them where he lies (as outlined in the Gospel of Luke). Bastianino's original work is an oil on wood panel (53 cm x 46 cm) currently held within the Gallerie Estensi/ Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara (located in beautiful Palazzo dei Diamanti), Ferrara, Italy.

This painting (also oil on panel) is a close copy of the original, probably made by a follower of Bastianino in Ferrara during the late 16th or early 17th c. Because the initials "VG" (as a brand/ sigillo) are found on the back of the work, it appears that the painting comes from the important and grandiose Roman art collection of Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564-1637), an aristocratic banker who amassed fine art together with his brother, Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani, and in relation to a Giustiniani uncle of theirs who was also cardinal. In Rome, they lived large at Palazzo Giustiniani (in Via della Dogana Vecchia, near the Pantheon, and today the palace serves as the official residence of the President of the Italian Senate) where they decorated and collected hundreds of paintings, including many by Caravaggio, and this one by a close follower of Bastianino.

  • Dimensions: 13" x 18" unframed; 24" x 29" framed
  • Condition: There are approximately 11 worm holes in the panel. The panel has split and has been reinforced. There are two vertical lines in the center of the composition that correlate to the panel splitting. The most significant area of some loss and restoration runs from Joseph's right eye through his elbow. There are small losses in the trees, Joseph's arm, and Joseph's leg. Some loss and inpaint in the shepherd's red shirt. Some paint is lifting, but still intact. All of these areas are visible in the photographs attached. Other than these noted areas, there is no visible inpaint or restoration when viewed under u.v. light.
