Description:

Meredith Brooks Abbott
California, (b. 1938)
Mallards and Coots, 1996
oil on canvas
Abbott grew up in a rural setting and studied art at Scripps College in Claremont, California, as well as in Los Angeles and New York. She currently lives and works in Carpenteria, CA, on an avocado and lemon ranch that includes an 1870 farmhouse surrounded by great natural beauty thanks to her meandering gardens filled with blossoming flowers and trees and much wildlife. Beyond painting in an of itself, Abbott works as a conservation activist and as a member of OAK (Open Airing Klub), a group of artists focusing on endangered animals as their subject matter--or on depicting animals in areas threatened by contemporary development. Here she has created a lovely impressionistic scene captured from one of those still-wondrous natural areas: a healthy group of male and female mallards (wild dabbling ducks) alongside some coots (duck-like water-dwelling birds, or mud hens) as they swim, socialize, search for food and stand in shallow water on a rainy, grey, overcast day.
