Description:

Piranesi Print in a Nice Frame: PIRANESI ANTIQUARIORUM de ROMANORUM MAGNIFICENTIA ET ARCHITECTURA, early 20th century printing
Wonderful print by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), a famous archeologist, architect, antiquarian, artist and founder of what became an extremely well-known family workshop in Rome. As a family Giovanni Battista (and together with his children, Francesco and Laura) ran a spectacular print workshop in Rome that focused on the promotion of the ruins and the classical architecture and design of Ancient Rome. Their engravings were made for both 18th c. aristocratic visitors who came to Rome to learn about Antiquity as part of "The Grand Tour" as well as for Romans and Italians interested in Antiquity.

This particular engraving comes from the frontispiece of _De Romanorum Magnificentia et Architectura_, which features 100 pages of etchings illustrating Roman buildings and architectural details. This etching features a rectangular marble tablet sculpted in relief filled with text in Latin, trophies and ornaments illustrating the magnificence of the ancient Romans. In a circle in the centre a winged genius is carving the arms of Pope Clement XIII in a roundel; behind the arms is a statue of a sphinx. The circle is framed with an elaborate carved border including relief sculptures of two people dining, oak leaves, and a rosebud moulding which leaves the border at the bottom, traverses the fasces and trails to the edge of the marble. The overall collection of etchings in this book (printed in Rome, 1761) shows Piranesi's remarkable skill as both artist and draftsman. This volume became an important visual resource for 18th, 19th and 20th c. architects and designers working in the Neo-Classical style.
