Description:

Spanish Colonial Retablo of the Trinity--La Santísima Trinidad (in the form of Three Identical Young Men)
The three elements of The Trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost) are depicted here as three nearly identical-looking young men, each with nearly identical garments and nearly identical long hair and facial hair--as if they were triplets of the same age and size. Their light-colored robes symbolize purity/ faith/ light/ integrity. Each young man however is clearly distinguishable thanks to individualized symbols and garments (attributes). 1) God the Father is in the center; he also holds a sceptre in his left hand. 2) God the Son (on the right) holds a small lamb close to his chest, signifying his role as the Paschal Victim; his left hand. 3) God the Holy Spirit (on the left) holds the dove close to his chest. The three young men are painted among a series of round stylized clouds. And if you look closely at the background, there are triangles painted above and behind them--triangular halos--and final proof of the image as a depiction of The Trinity.

  • Dimensions: ca. 17.5cm x ca. 13cm
  • Condition: Good--but has some chipped paint and rust. Upper right corner is worn, and lower right corner is folded back.
