Description:

The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia, and the Sword Hunters of the Hamran Arabs. Sir Samuel Baker. 1st Edition. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, and London: Macmillan, 1867.
The first edition of Baker's exploration work on the Nile, an interesting work illustrated throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding map, one map, and twenty-two plates. Collated, complete. Baker's tour started in 1861 in Central Africa, and he undertook his journey intending to discover the sources of the River Nile and its sediment from Ethiopia. Baker (known for being the first European to visit Lake Albert) was an abolitionist, engineer, big game hunter, and Governor-general of the Equatorial Nile Basin. Queen Victoria refused to meet Baker based on the way in which he met his wife (he had bought his wife, Florence, as a slave). Bookplate to the front paste down. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Spine is a little discoloured. Hinges are a little strained but remain firm. Pages are bright and generally clean.
