Description:

Thomas Hart Benton, American
Handwritten and signed letter. dated Nov. 14, 1967. The letter, with envelope, is addressed to Leonard Lyons. In it, Benton discusses Billy Rose's painting selling at Parke-Bernet. Benton writes: "Billy, as you know, paid $3,000 for it in 1939 or '40. At the auction it was bid in at $17,000 and shortly thereafter re-sold for $35,000. So I should have encouraged you to buy some 'Bentons' at 1930 prices." Benton goes on to discuss the increase in the value of his paintings and speculates: "Maybe this is happening because people think I'm near to turning up my toes. But I'll fool 'em." He then goes on to discuss publications with the Missouri University Press.

This letter is sold with a copy of The Nine Lives of Billy Rose, by Polly Rose Gottlieb, and Thomas Hart Benton, An American Original, by Henry Abrams.
