The Glorification of the Name of Jesus (detail)
oil on canvas
Anthonis (or Antoon, or multiple variants) Sallaert was born in Brussels in 1594, became a master painter by 1613 and later served as dean of the painters' guild. He enjoyed a successful career not only as a painter but also as a printmaker and tapestry designer. He received numerous commissions from the archducal court and various religious orders, including the Jesuits who commissioned a large-scale painting called "The Glorification of the Name of Jesus" around 1635 (held today at the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels). Only a few decades after this piece by Sallaert did the Jesuits commission another similarly-titled painting called "Triumph of the Name of Jesus" for their central church in Rome: la Chiesa del Gesù.

This painting is a life-sized copy of a detail from that 1635 Flemish work and probably also made in Flanders sometime in the mid-17th c. The second unidentified painter (our painter here and clearly a close follower of Sallaert) chose to focus on a young Jesus standing alone and to cut out the rest of the figures and many details from the original altarpiece that once included two large angels and seven detailed scenes from Jesus' crucifixion.

This Jesus painting was probably commissioned by a wealthy Flemish parishioner for use as a private devotional in his/ her private home. The artist preserved the proportions and all essential elements from the original painting: Jesus standing as the central scene on top of a red cloth, Jesus' large eyes and golden locks, Jesus wearing a simple white tunic, the cross and nails, the eucharistic chalice, the flail from the flagellation, the crown of thorns, sun rays emanating from Jesus' head, and Jesus' three fingers held up in the air as a sign of the cross and representational of the Holy Trinity--all of the quintessential elements that would have helped an early modern viewer identify Jesus in a painting and remember his story in detail. A wonderfully preserved early modern devotional piece that could appeal to followers of Jesus from any era.
