A large portrait of a distinguished gentleman in 17th c. attire with long blond hair, tightly grasping his gloves, a symbol of his social status. He resembles a man named Cornelis Backer (1633-1681) who served as a councillor, an alderman, and the colonel of the Amsterdam militia. His large mantle is topped with a large and wide exquisite lace collar, popularly worn in 17th c. Amsterdam. A heraldic symbol is painted in the upper right quadrant that features a small and faintly painted yellow duck.
Set in a carved and ornately decorated large painted wood frame.
