1) F.O.C. Darley was born in Philadelphia in 1822 and became one of America's most famous illustrators working for Harper's Weekly, Benson John Lossing, Washington Irving, Edgar Allen Poe, et al. This print (5" x 3") illustrates what life was like on the East Coast for a handful of workers as they opened wooden crates and carried merchandise from ship to shore.

2) Fort Armstrong "drawn after nature" published for Hermann J. Meyer of 164 William Street, New York (6 1/2" x 4 1/2"). Fort Armstrong was built in 1816-1817 along the Mississippi River (about 200 miles north of St. Louis) and served as one of a system of forts along the river. Its riverside was protected by limestone bluffs and its other sides were formed in part by the rear walls of barracks and storehouses while blockhouses stood at three corners. The fort was garrisoned by United States troops until 1836 when it began to serve as headquarters for the Sauk and Fox Indian Agent (from 1836 to 1838) and as a military depot (from 1840 to 1845). It was destroyed by fire in 1855. It was named after John Armstrong, Secretary of War under President James Monroe.
