Other Notes: Harry Bertoia was an Italian-American sound art sculptor and modern furniture designer. At the age of 15 he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where, beginning in 1936, he attended the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. In 1937, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he pursued studies under Walter Gropius, Edmund N. Bacon, Ray and Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll. By the 1950s, he had established a successful career in furniture design. In the 1960s, he began to experiment with sound art sculptures of tall vertical rods on flat bases like the one which is here presented. Many of Bertoia's works can be found in museums throughout the US including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.
