Description:

Painting of a Priest Holding a Monstrance
Oil on tin, 19th c. Mexican. This icon features a cardinal (?) who wears a scarlet-coloured mozzetta (cape) over a white cassock and who holds up a monstrance in both hands. His beard symbolises his austerity and penance, and his black rosary beads hang alongside his left thigh. The painting is framed by scarlet-coloured drapery on the right-hand side and by a table covered in a scarlet-covered textile on the left; the background color is dark green. Below the drapery on the right hand side there is a long green braided and tasseled decorative cord and there are two gold crowns suspended in the air. Possibly Peruvian/ Cuzco school.

  • Dimensions: 17.5cm x 25cm
  • Condition: Fairly good. However there are multiple white-colored scratches across the surface.
