Description:

Painting of Saint Jerome in the Desert
Oil on tin, 19th c. Mexican. Here we have a bearded holy man, an image of the 4th c. St. Jerome/ San Jerónimo, who is wearing a red cape (reminiscent of when he had served as a cardinal/ advisor in Rome to Pope Damascus) and holding a weighted cross in his right hand. His wounds on his arm, chest and middle torso come from his visit to Heaven when he was scourged for having brought along non-religious books; the black stone he holds in his left hand was also used as a form of self-inflicted penitential punishment. A memento mori skull sits on a ledge behind his cross, and a small lion peeks out from behind his scarlet-colored cape. Since Jerome had removed a painful thorn from the lion's paw, the lion stayed with him, befriended him, and guarded him when alone in nature. The background is a forested hill (also called a 'desert')--where Jerome was known to have spent four years praying and fasting. A trumpet from Heaven calls to him from above (in the upper right-hand corner)--trumpeting towards him the call for the Last Judgment.

  • Dimensions: ca. 16.5cm x 25cm
  • Condition: Good. A few small and rather insignificant scratches. Lower left corner had been slightly folded over and is now lost (half of 8mm x 4mm)
